insulin-like growth factor 1 raises a handful of sensible questions. This page answers them in order, starting with the fundamentals and moving to applications.

Insulin-like growth factor 1 is produced largely in the liver in response to growth hormone signaling. Its concentration shifts over days rather than minutes, which makes it practical for tracking changes across a study period. Interpretation still depends on age, nutritional status, and concurrent illness, all of which independently affect the marker. Reference ranges are therefore stratified, and comparisons are usually made within an individual over time rather than against a single population threshold.
Assays for these markers differ in calibration and antibody specificity, so results from different platforms are not always interchangeable. Reported values can shift when a laboratory changes method, even without any biological change. Studies that span long periods or multiple sites often need cross-validation of assays. This methodological variability is a recognized limitation when comparing findings across published reports, and it remains a topic of ongoing standardization work.
Measuring the effect of a growth hormone-releasing hormone analogue requires markers that reflect pituitary output rather than the peptide itself. The two most frequently used are growth hormone and insulin-like growth factor 1. Growth hormone fluctuates sharply across the day and responds to sleep, stress, and meals, so isolated readings can be difficult to interpret. Insulin-like growth factor 1 changes more slowly and is often treated as the more stable integrated marker of axis activity.

Tesamorelin is a synthetic peptide built from 44 amino acids and classified with the growth hormone–releasing hormone family. Its sequence corresponds to the human GHRH(1-44) backbone, carrying one structural change at the amino terminus. That change is a trans-3-hexenoyl group placed where the natural peptide would have an unmodified end. The modification is the feature that separates the compound from the endogenous hormone in name, in stability, and in how it is handled in the laboratory.
The hexenoyl cap slows the enzyme step that trims the amino terminus of native GHRH, the same step that shortens its active lifetime in circulation. As a result, the modified peptide persists longer in plasma than the unmodified hormone in side-by-side comparison. Receptor activity stays broadly comparable, because the added group sits away from the residues that contact the binding site. This combination, preserved receptor activity with reduced degradation, explains why the analog was developed instead of the native sequence.
Several compounds share the GHRH framework, including sermorelin, the shorter 1-29 fragment, and other analogs built on the full 1-44 chain. Naming follows a common convention: a stem that identifies the peptide plus a suffix marking analog status. Reports may describe tesamorelin by its sequence fragment, as a GHRH(1-44) analog, or by its amino-terminal modification. Indexing the compound therefore requires searching all of these forms, since some older literature predates the current international nonproprietary name.
Fasting blood glucose test A method for finding out how much glucose (sugar) is in the blood, at a time when recent food intake does not affect glucose levels. The test can aid in diagnosis; a single reading of 126 mg/dL (7 mmol/L) is diagnostic except in newborns or pregnant women or in some unusual other conditions. A blood sample is often taken in a lab or doctor's office. The test is often done in the morning before the person has first eaten. The normal, nondiabetic range for fasting blood glucose is between 70 and 110 mg/dL (5 – 7 mmol/L), depending on the person (there is some variations between individuals), whether the blood is from a vein or a capillary, and depending on how the measurement is made (e.g., on whole blood or just the plasma). It can also be done by anyone with a blood glucose meter, proper supplies, and an understanding of how to test using them. Fats food substances which are the chief energy storage mechanism in organisms such as plants and animals. Fat molecules are composed of fatty acid chains attached to a glycerol backbone, usually in threes. Fats vary in the details of just which fatty acid variants are attached. Possibilities include saturated (the usual case in animal source fats), mono or poly unsaturated (from many plant oils, have one (mono) or more (poly) double carbon bonds in the fatty acid chain), and in where the double bond is (at the omega carbon in the 3 position, or the 6 position or ...). Some fats are required in the human diet, they are the 'essential oils'.
The aerosol or spallation frangible powder produced by impact and combustion of depleted uranium munitions (or armour) can potentially contaminate wide areas around the impact sites, leading to possible inhalation by human beings. The actual level of acute and chronic toxicity of DU is also controversial. Several studies using cultured cells and laboratory rodents suggest the possibility of leukemogenic, genetic, reproductive, and neurological effects from chronic exposure. A 2005 epidemiology review concluded "In aggregate the human epidemiological evidence is consistent with increased risk of birth defects in offspring of persons exposed to DU." A 2021 study concluded that DU from exploding munitions did not lead to Gulf War illness in American veterans deployed in the Gulf War. A 2011 study found elevated levels of uranium in soil and hair samples from Fallujah, Iraq, but it was from slightly enriched uranium instead of DU.
One published paper concluded more study is needed of the association between autism and the use of paracetamol (acetaminophen) in infants and young children. This association does not necessarily demonstrate a causal relationship.
Evidence of application of poison derived from plants (likely from Boophone disticha) on the tips of 60,000-years-old arrowhead from the Umhlatuzana Rock Shelter (South Africa) is presented by Isaksson, Högberg & Lombard (2026). Arlt (2026) determines the Robberg stone tool tradition in southern Africa to span the internal from 24.800 to 9.700 years ago rather than from 18.000 to 12.000 years ago, and reports evidence of a more gradual transition between Robberg and Oakhurst technocomplexes than indicated by earlier studies. Review of research on the origin and on the course of global spread of Homo sapiens out of Africa from the preceding years is published by Groucutt (2026). Pantoja-Pérez et al. (2026) identify dental and bone abnormalities in the mandible of Qafzeh 25 as likely caused by sharp object trauma, and report evidence of survival of the studied individual after the injury. Litov, Ben-Dor & Barkai (2026) interpret the decline of use of in heavy-duty tools in Levant after the Lower-Middle Paleolithic transition, coinciding with decline of megaherbivores in the studied region, as indicating that the studied tools were primarily used for processing of large prey. Abbas et al. (2026) provide evidence from the study of riverine wetland environments from the Hamra Faddan and Wadi al-Hasa localities from the eastern margin of the Jordan Rift Valley interpreted as indicating that southern Levant provided a stable environmental niche that sustained human populations from the late Middle Paleolithic to the Upper Paleolithic. === COVID-19 vaccine controversy === In February 2021, after a year long investigation relying on unnamed officials, Pfizer was accused by The Bureau of Investigative Journalism (TBIJ) of employing "high-level bullying" against at least two Latin American countries during negotiations to acquire COVID-19 vaccines, including requesting that the countries put sovereign assets as collateral for payments. According to TBIJ, these negotiation tactics resulted in a months long delay in Pfizer reaching a vaccine agreement with one country and a complete failure to reach agreements with two other countries, including Argentina and Brazil. In November 2021, TBMJ published an article after obtaining information from a whistleblower from the Ventavia Research Group. Ventavia was hired by Pfizer as a research subcontractor. A regional director (whistleblower) who was employed at Ventavia Research Group has told The BMJ that the company falsified data, unblinded patients, employed inadequately trained vaccinators, and was slow to follow up on adverse events reported in Pfizer's pivotal phase III trial. The regional director, Brook Jackson, emailed a complaint to the FDA. Ventavia fired her later the same day. The European Medicines Agency (EMA) stated in a response to the European Parliament, that "the deficiencies identified do not jeopardize the quality and integrity of the data from the main Comirnaty trial and have no impact on the benefit-risk assessment or on the conclusions on the safety, effectiveness and quality of the vaccine".
Sermorelin acetate (INNTooltip International Nonproprietary Name; brand names Geref, Gerel), also known as GHRH (1-29), is a peptide analogue of growth hormone-releasing hormone (GHRH) which is used as a diagnostic agent to assess growth hormone (GH) secretion for the purpose of diagnosing growth hormone deficiency. It is a 29-amino acid polypeptide representing the 1–29 fragment from endogenous human GHRH, thought to be the shortest fully functional fragment of GHRH. Sermorelin was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1997 for use as a treatment for children with growth hormone deficiency or growth failure. However, as of 2008, the manufacturer discontinued the production of Sermorelin for commercial reasons, and it is no longer available as an FDA-approved drug. Despite this, it may still be used in some off-label contexts or obtained through compounding pharmacies.
NS Otto Hahn, the only European nuclear-powered civilian ship (1964); a crater on the Moon (shared with his namesake Friedrich von Hahn); and the asteroid 19126 Ottohahn; the Otto Hahn Prize of both the German Chemical and Physical Societies and the city of Frankfurt/Main; the Otto Hahn Medal – An Incentive for Young Scientists – and the Otto Hahn Award of the Max Planck Society; and the Otto Hahn Peace Medal in Gold of the United Nations Association of Germany (DGVN) in Berlin (1988). Proposals were made at various times, first in 1971 by American chemists, that the newly synthesised element 105 should be named hahnium in Hahn's honour, but in 1997 the IUPAC named it dubnium, after the Russian research centre in Dubna. In 1992 element 108 was discovered by a German research team, and they proposed the name hassium (after Hesse). In spite of the long-standing convention to give the discoverer the right to suggest a name, a 1994 IUPAC committee recommended that it be named hahnium. After protests from the German discoverers, the name hassium (Hs) was adopted internationally in 1997.

In addition, spironolactone has been used at high doses to treat pregnant women with Bartter's syndrome, and none of the infants (three boys, two girls) showed toxicity, including feminization in the male infants. Similar findings, albeit also limited, exist for another antiandrogen, cyproterone acetate (prominent genital defects in male rats, but no human abnormalities (including feminization of male fetuses) at both a low dose of 2 mg/day or high doses of 50 to 100 mg/day). In any case, spironolactone is nonetheless not recommended during pregnancy due to theoretical concerns relating to feminization of males and also to potential alteration of fetal potassium levels. A 2019 systematic review found insufficient evidence that spironolactone causes birth defects in humans. Evidence was insufficient to be certain that it does not.
Although geneticists originally studied inheritance in a wide variety of organisms, the range of species studied has narrowed. One reason is that when significant research already exists for a given organism, new researchers are more likely to choose it for further study, and so eventually a few model organisms became the basis for most genetics research. Common research topics in model organism genetics include the study of gene regulation and the involvement of genes in development and cancer. Organisms were chosen, in part, for convenience—short generation times and easy genetic manipulation made some organisms popular genetics research tools. Widely used model organisms include the gut bacterium Escherichia coli, the plant Arabidopsis thaliana, baker's yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae), the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans, the common fruit fly (Drosophila melanogaster), the zebrafish (Danio rerio), and the common house mouse (Mus musculus).
Barrow's inequality strengthens the Erdős–Mordell inequality, which has identical form except with PU, PV, and PW replaced by the three distances of P from the triangle's sides. It is named after David Francis Barrow. Barrow's proof of this inequality was published in 1937, as his solution to a problem posed in the American Mathematical Monthly of proving the Erdős–Mordell inequality. This result was named "Barrow's inequality" as early as 1961. A simpler proof was later given by Louis J. Mordell.

It varies slowly and reflects cumulative axis activity rather than momentary secretion. Growth hormone is released in pulses affected by sleep, stress, and meals, making single readings hard to interpret. The slower marker gives a more stable picture across a study period.
Assay calibration and antibody specificity differ between platforms, so identical samples can yield different numbers. A method change within one laboratory can shift results without any biological change. Cross-validation is often needed for multi-site work.
They capture only one moment in a pulsatile pattern and are strongly influenced by recent activity and meals. Repeated sampling or overnight profiles provide a more representative view. Provocative testing is an alternative when a dynamic response is of interest.
